1. Introduce yourself to us (are you: loc'ed, newly natural, natural-n-pressed, etc.)

My name is Moniek and I am newly natural. I have been natural for 6 months.

2. Welcome to Natural-ness! You recently big chopped; how do you feel?

After my chop I was nervous but once it was done, I had no choice [but to embrace it] lol.

3. How did people react to the changes you made to your hair?

The first reactions were pretty good. Most of my friends and family were very supportive. My male friends didn’t quite understand the whole thing though. My little brother and step father hate it, lol.

4. Since it's still early for you, establishing a regimen is trial and error right now. What's your current hair regimen?

I went through the phase of buying every product I saw or that someone recommended and none of them worked. Currently I shampoo with Karen’s Body Beautiful shampoo. Then, I condition with Kinky-Curly Knot Today Leave-In and rinse it out. Next, I use Hairveda hydration moisturizer mixed with EVOO or vitamin E oil. Finally, I use Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream to do finger coils.

5. I remember how challenging the first 3 months were for me when it came to styling. What's your staple hairstyle?

Right now I have a TWA..lol my hair is naturally curly so I just make sure my curls hold for about 4 days or so.

6. What's your favorite hair accessory?

Hair pins..LOL I do love head bands but I always need hair pins.

7. Moisture, moisture, moisture. How have you succeeded in retaining moisture?

It’s a work in progress.

8. With the internet and YouTube full of natural hair resources, where do you obtain tips and tricks about how to manage natural hair?

YouTube was awesome for me. It had great tips on styling short natural hair. It made me see how many people are actually natural and have the same issues as I do.

Anyway, since the weather was so nice I decided to switch up my hair a little and have a photo shoot. I reached way back into my styling portfolio and chose a puff.

Tips for Moisturizing Dry Hair (Naptural85)

Hey Guys!

A popular question I receive on my Facebook Wall and Twitter Page is

How can I repair my dry hair? I can't get it to retain moisture!?"

I did a video on this specific topic, which I'll link below, but I also wanted to address it on my blog for anyone who might have missed the video.

Dry curly hair, especially dry African-American curly hair, is normal! Our hair is naturally curly, coarse and dry, it's just how it grows out of our heads. With straight hair, it's easy for the natural oils to travel down the hair shaft, keeping it moisturized. But with curly, coily hair, it's a lot harder for the oils to navigate, which causes the hair to remain dry, especially towards the ends. So don't assume that because your hair is dry, it's always an indication of how well you care for your hair, or signs of neglect. Most of the time it's just a characteristic of our hair! I can moisturize the heck out of my hair and still have it be dry by the end of the day.

My coily hair dries out more often, when worn in a "Wash and Go" state. In a twist out state, my natural coils are combed out and less-defined (hair is straighter) causing moisture to last longer.

With that being said, there are ways that we can return the moisture to our hair! There are solutions, but know that they wont be permanent. Since our hair is naturally dry, you'll need to repeat these processes daily and weekly in order for your hair to remain moisturized. Similar to drinking water to keep hydrated, and plants that need to be watered every single day, our hair needs the same treatment or it will return to it's natural dry state.
Personally, my hair is really thirsty and get's dry really fast. In order to keep my hair moisturized I do the following "regimen." I'm not perfect in doing the same thing every single month, but I always do some variation of the following:

Daily Moisture Treatments:

One of the most simple solutions to combating dry hair on a daily basis is to apply water on your hair day and night. In my experience, it's not enough to just apply products or oils to your dry hair, it needs water first. The water is the moisture, while the oils and products are what seals the moisture in.

I fill my spray bottle with two-thirds water and one-third aloe vera juice. Then give my hair a light spritz every morning and night, just enough to penetrate my strands, but not enough to make my hair soaking wet, so it doesn't ruin my style. I add the aloe vera juice because of it's amazing healing properties. It also helps to ease frizz and calms the ends of your hair.

After lightly spritzing with water, follow up with a bit of your favorite oil-based hair product to seal the moisture in. My favorite sealing product is my homemade shea butter cream.

This method works well on any style you're wearing: wash and go, twist out, bantu knot out, etc.. The only style you won't want to do this to is a silky, smooth flat- ironed style, as the water might revert your straight hair.

Weekly Moisture Treatments:

Once-per-week or once-every-two-weeks, a deep conditioning treatment is really helpful. Two of my favorite deep conditioning treatments are my Homemade Mayo Deep Conditioner and my Homemade Greek Yogurt Deep Conditioner, both uploaded to my Naptural85 Youtube Channel. They're both packed with protein, so they're extremely helpful in helping to strengthen your strands.

Give them a try if you're not protein sensitive! Otherwise, use any deep conditioner of your choice at least once per week in order to infuse moisture and beneficial minerals and vitamins to your hair.

After your deep conditioning treatment, while your hair is wet, be sure to seal in the moisture with your favorite oil-based hair product.

Anytime Moisture Treatments:

"Water Bagging"
If you're hanging around the house with nothing to do, why not condition your hair! A really quick way to infuse moisture into your hair without a lot of fuss, is to "water bag".

Spritz your hair with water (and aloe vera juice if you like) and throw on a plastic cap! Keep it on for as long as you want. You can even sleep with it on if you want to! When you take the plastic cap off, your hair will be extremely soft, and the best part, there's nothing to wash out! Just follow up with your favorite oil-based hair product to seal the moisture in.

"Conditioning on The Go"

This is one of my favorite things to do, especially in the extreme cold of winter and extreme heat of summer. I uploaded a video of this to my Youtube Channel, but I'll also attach it here!

So that's basically all I do to retain the moisture in my hair. Again, my hair is naturally very dry, but these simple daily and weekly treatments really help me maintain the moisture. There's a lot of products out there that promise to help you retain your moisture, but for me, water, shea butter, and various oils has done wonders for the structure of my strands.

Again, not everyone's hair is the same, but I believe that water is the best moisturizer you can use. I think what makes the difference is the product that you use to seal the water in. If your hair has a looser curl pattern, you can get away with lighter products to seal the moisture in, like light oils. But if you have a tighter curl pattern, you'll want to stick to heavier creamier products, like butters (shea, mango, etc…) to really help the hair absorb the moisture.

It's been awhile since I updated my staple products list so I figured now would be a great time to tell you what I'm using these days. There are a few products that have been removed since I don't use them with the same frequency as before. If I've learned anything during my natural hair journey, it's that you must adapt as your hair changes. What my hair used to respond to, it may no longer do so. I've also found that the less products I use, the more my hair grows. One thing I suggest you never skimp on is a good deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner and moisturizer.

With winter here, my main concern is moisture. I now do weekly deep conditioning and try to keep my hair in a protective style throughout the week to avoid the harsh, cold air. If you have the heat cranked up in your home, make sure you have a humidifier to help keep moisture in the air so your strands don't get too dry.

Meet China, our very first international Natural Spotlight. Below is her story about her natural hair journey and the natural hair scene in Germany.

1. Introduce yourself to us (are you: loc'ed, newly natural, natural-n-pressed, etc.)

My name is China. I live in Germany, but I'm a Nigerian. I'm just natural.

2. How long have you been natural? Are you still surprised when people stop you on the street to question you about your hair?

I've been natural for about 1 year and 6 months after transitioning for 10 months. I'm not surprise about that [when people stop me to ask about my hair] because I'm used to such reactions over here. It's uncommon seeing Black girls with natural hair in Germany, so people do ask questions [when they see a black girl with her natural hair].

3. How did people react to the changes you made to your hair? Were they supportive or against it?

In the beginning, I never received any kind of encouragement or positive reaction at all; they all thought it isn't going to work out with the whole natural thing. All my friends and family thought I was crazy and they thought this change of mine wouldn't stay for long, but now they all think the opposite after seeing me sticking to it and also progressing at it.

4. What's the one thing you've noticed about yourself since going natural?

I'm really happy and confident stepping into the room looking different from others. This shows I accept everything about me being Black including my nappy afro hair texture. And people respect that and find that outstanding.

5. What's the natural hair scene like in Germany?

It's rare to see Black girls with natural hair in this country. It's really sad because most of them don't know and don't believe their hair could look so good when its natural. It was a challenge for me at first being natural while girls go around with their long wavy straight hair. But as time went by, people started liking it.

Most Black girls and also the Germans, like my natural hair. They find it very interesting. I've found that the most Black girls lack patience and see it as alot of work when it comes to growing out their natural hair. They forget it's a learning process that gets easier as time goes by.

6. What's your hair regimen?

I wash my hair once every week or sometimes every two weeks. I deep condition every time I wash my hair with Ganier Fructis Oil Repair Deep Conditioner or Dove Total Repair Mixed with olive oil and honey; this mix does wonders. I shampoo with Ganier Fructis Oil Repair Moisturizing Shampoo every time I wash my hair. After all of that, I do a twist out or braid out. I often wear protective hairstyles in winter because I'm too lazy to do alot to my hair and because of school.

7. Natural hair has come quite a trend and women are being criticized for it. What advice do you have for women who are considering going natural but fear the negative feedback?

If you love your natural hair and you are confident wearing it out, others will do the same. People may criticize your decision but as long as you stand firm, who are they to judge? Rock your natural hair and be proud of it.

Hair Breaks

Happy New Year again! Let's chat about "breaks" shall we? Breaks? What ever do you mean, Monique? I'm talking about hair breaks; letting your hair rest. Not only has the winter made me super lazy and want to climb into a cave to sleep the next 3 months, it has also made me neglect my tresses.

Yes, you read that right; I have not been taking care of my hair the way I should and I'm ok with that. I've come to realize that much like bears need the winter months to rest and recoup from the heat and humidity, our hair can use a break from manipulation and dry, cold air.

I recently wore minitwists for a week and loved it! This time, I want to step the challenge up and wear them for 2-3 weeks. I am going to attempt real minitwists. I love the mini twists done by Naptural85 and Kinky Kurly Queen so I'm going to give them a try. My hair really could use a break and if I weren't going to lunch with some of my line sisters tomorrow, my hair would be twisted up.

Natural Spotlight: Gillian

Meet one of my nearest and dearest friends, Gillian. She shares her natural hair journey from loose hair to Sisterlocs and everything in between.

1. Introduce yourself to us (are you: loc'd, newly natural, natural-n-pressed, etc.)
I've been wearing my natural hair for over 10 years. I transitioned for about 6 months during my freshman year of college and then did the big chop. I let my hair grow out and wore my loose natural hair until I started Sisterlocs 4 years ago.

2. You have sister locs. What are sister locs and why did you decide to loc your hair?
Sisterlocs are a form of microlocs. The method is similar to crocheting which allows a tighter loc. I've always admired women with locs. They always look so regal but in an effortless way. I knew I'd loc eventually. I remember when I first learned about Sisterlocs. They sounded too good to be true! I was skeptical until I saw someone with them in person at a natural hair show. I was sold but it still took me a few years to finally take the plunge.

My reservations were that the startup costs, both time and financial were high, and that I’d have to rely on someone else to do my hair. But the pros definitely outweighed the perceived cons for me.

Sisterlocs were right for me because they are smaller-sized locs. Since my hair is very thin, having smaller locs allows me to create more volume. I also love how versatile they are. There's almost no hairstyle that I can't do with them. I also chose Sisterlocs because I like being able to wash my hair whenever I want. I loved that I was able to wash my hair immediately after having my locs installed and was able to take twice-a-week swimming lessons while my hair was locing without worrying about my hair unraveling in between retightenings. And finally, I chose Sisterlocs because I really don't have to do anything to maintain them in between retightenings. I have friends who locked their hair using other techniques such as palm rolling and they have to do their hair every time they wash their hair. I’m lazy when it comes to my hair and I don’t want to HAVE to do my hair.

3. Being that you are of Jamaican heritage, did your culture play a large part in your decision to go natural?

There’s a misconception that Jamaicans are more embracing of natural hair and that couldn’t be further from the truth. I probably got the most opposition from my family and close family friends. They thought I was trying to be a rebel. After I did the big chop, I remember one family friend stating “next thing you know, you’re going to get a tattoo, a boyfriend with a bike, and get pregnant”… Ummm. Okay. (Scratches head). Over time my family came to love my hair. They were initially resistant to me locing my hair because of the association to Rastafarianism, but they were eventually on board with it. In fact, my mom was the one who encouraged me to loc my hair. And now, I am happy to say that many of my other naysayers are natural as well. Booyah!!

4. I remember when we met YEARS ago, you were rocking a big loose afro puff that I still envy to this day. What was your hair regimen at that time?

I’ve always been pretty lazy when it comes to hair and don't like spending a lot of time on it. I was the Queen of the twistout. My once a week routine was easy: wash and condition hair, finger comb while conditioner in hair, moisturize ends with olive oil, towel dry, twist with Jamaican Mango Lime Loc and Twist Gel, let set overnight, and release the twists in the morning. To maintain it during the week, I’d put it in a ponytail and retwist any sections that got frizzy.

5. How have people reacted to the changes you've made to your hair over the years?
With the exception of the initial shock when I first went natural, I've gotten nothing but positive responses. People are curious, inspired, or just appreciate seeing a natural black woman.

6. Caring for loc'd hair, particularly sister locs requires a certain delicate touch. What is your current hair regimen?

I wish I could say I had a certain touch when it comes to caring for my locs, but I don't really. I wash my hair at least once a week. If it’s really out outside or I'm super active, I’ll wash 2-3 times a week. After washing, ill towel dry with a superabsorbent towel and massage my scalp and the ends of my hair with oil.

I like a curly or crinkly look, so I’ll a wet set using pipe cleaners or rods, or a braid out. I prefer to let my hair dry overnight, but since my hair has gotten longer it takes longer to dry. I’ll sometimes go under a hooded dryer to speed up the drying process.

I also invested in a Caruso steam roller set, which is a quickset rollerset using steam. They worked beautifully and would create a curl in 30 minutes that would last me for a few days. Unfortunately, the system isn't curling so well for me now that my hair has gotten longer, so I’m looking for an alternative way to achieve a quick curl. These things come in handy when you have an impromptu date or an invitation for dinner at the White House. (What? Can't a girl dream?)

I am proud to say that I am a recovering product junkie. I like using natural products with ingredients that I am familiar with. The products I use are:

Shampoo: diluted Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap (I also use this as a body wash)

Oils: jojoba oil for scalp and coconut oil for hair (I also use coconut oil as an all-over body moisturizer) l

Moisturizer: a spritz I made with aloe vera gel, distilled water, and olive oil

My advice? Do you, boo. As long as YOU feel beautiful, that's what matters. Get tips from real people from blogs (like naturalandfab) and YouTube. Experiment until you find something that makes you feel gorgeous and that works with your lifestyle and budget.

The Lockedhairblog exchange is a compilation of blogs with people with Sisterlocs and microlocs.

On YouTube, I like The Bronzed Goddess and Chescaleigh. I also like Salkis, who has Sisterlocs. She doesn't have too many videos, but I learned how to curl my Sisterlocs using permrods from her.

Not yet, but I am contemplating starting a blog that showcases my recipes: cooking, hair, health, and body. I’ll keep you posted.

Just Me

In between catching up on emails, writing new blog posts, doing actual work, putting together a gift prize package for a winner (it's on the way, Juilana!), I snapped a quick picture of my hair today. I twisted my hair into small twists (not mini) and pulled them apart once. Isn't the definition crazy? This style should last for the next 3-4 days and all I have to do is sleep with a bonnet on to preserve it.

I think someone asked me about my hair color before and I realized I didn't answer it. I do not have black hair. Nope, not one single strand of my hair is black. In fact, my hair is actually brown and reddish brown, hence, the slight discoloration you see. In the sunlight my hair looks red. Weird, huh?

It finally happened to me

Picture it: Walmart, late on Friday night, wandering aimlessly up and down the toy aisles looking for a Leapfrog Leappad...

It's late so I'm looking rather homely in my sweatpants, an old t-shirt and some sneakers. Not to mention my recently released and beautiful twist-out is held back by a headband as my son and walk up and down the toy section at Walmart. Just as I round the corner to go up another aisle, this random Dominican woman walks up to me and thrusts a business card at me.

After a quick scan, I realize that is a card for her hair salon. I politely decline and give it back to her but she thrusts it back to me.

Me: No thank you.
Her: You come. I straighten hair.
Me: No thank you, I don't straighten my hair.
Her: Never?!
Me: I've only done it once and perfect to do it myself. Thank you though.
Her: Well take my card. I straighten your hair.
Me: *huge sigh as I walk away without the card*

This is the first time I've had an encounter like this. Normally people ask "why is your hair like that?" or "You like your nappy like that?!". Never have I met someone so determined to straighten my kinks and coils. I guess my head looked a hot mess to her and she thought she was helping me out. LOL I don't apologize for liking my kinky "nappy" hair. I'd rather have that than heat damaged strands any day!

Saturday Night Hair

After rolling in from karaoke in the wee hours of the night, I knew I needed to wash the smoke from my hair before going to bed because we were going to a Marvin Gaye tribute concert Saturday night. Needless to say, I washed and twisted my hair at 4am 0_0. I wanted to keep my hair simple since we were going to a birthday party of a mutual friend that night as well so low maintenance and sassy was the look I was going for.

I had every intention of leaving my minitwists in for another week but I decided I missed my big hair so I pulled them apart. I must say, the definition left behind was fantastic. Friday night I hung out with some friends for karaoke at a bar in Midtown. No I didn't sing but I got some hilarious video of the crew.

I rarely do outfit posts but I was feeling myself that night. LOL

Tutorial: Braid Outs for Transitioners

During my transition, the braid out was my staple hair style. Where many preferred to do their braids individually, I did mine in cornrows and would take them down the next day after they air dried. MsArielle89 shows us her braid out while she still has a few inches of permed hair. The good thing about braids out are that they are easy to do, require little product, and blend the two textures well.

Minitwists - Take 1

For my first attempt at a protective style this season, I decided to give twists a try. I checked out a couple of YouTube videos to see how others were doing them, what steps they were using, etc. Naptural85 has a pretty good tutorial as well as KinkyKurlyQueen, although I didn't do mine as tiny as she did.

I shampooed and conditioned my hair with my Shea Moisture products. I followed my normal process of moisturizing my edges with Jamaican Black Castor Oil and then sectioned my hair into smaller sections to apply Kinky Curl Knot Today Leave-In for detangling. Next, I braided my hair into 6 large braids to stretch it and dry overnight. The next day, I took the braids down and separated my hair out. I fingerparted my hair because I didn't want it to look too "scalpy". With each section I parted, I slightly dampened it with water and applied a little SM Curl Milk for twisting. I split each of the parts in half and did two twists. My twists at the crown of my hair a little larger since I wanted to make sure my hair was fuller there.

After a couple of hours of twisting (I took a couple of breaks), I had a head full of mini-twists. I sealed my ends with a little vatika oil and wrap my hair each night with a satin scarf or bonnet. I am loving these twists. It's great to just get up, shake my hair and go each morning. In terms of daily maintenance, I don't have to do very much. I may lightly mist it with water and a little oil or rub flaxseed gel through them.

I have received tons of compliments on my hair. I can't wait to play around with some of the styling. And for those of you who work in a corporate environment, mini-twists are a great style to wear. You can pin them back, up to the side for a bit of sassiness.

Thanksgiving Hair

Thanksgiving this year was at my parent's house. I knew mom was going to throwdown (which I helped with) so I wore a comfy gray dress and a light sweater to coverup my arms. My hair is the result of twists I wore for about 3 days and finally took down. I pulled some of it over to the side and pinned it back.

Hi I'm Shanell, most folks call me Carmool. I wear my hair natural, most times in an afro or bantu knots but mainly a two strand twist out.

2. How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for over 2 years now, however, this is my 3rd time doing the big chop and growing it out.

3. How did people react to the changes you made to your hair? Were they supportive or against it?

The 1st time I chopped it off was for my mother who had cancer and was going through chemo therapy. She was sad about losing hair but tried to carry on as if she wasn't. One day I walked in the bathroom, saw my father's clippers and shaved it all off so my mom wouldn't be so uncomfortable. A lot of people were shocked at first, but they are so used to me doing zany things with my hair they were wondering what colors I would dye it when it started to grow back in.

4. What's the one thing you've noticed about yourself since going natural?

That I love the feeling of freedom my hair gives to me!!! And I especially love how men react to it :)

5. What's your hair regimen?

ALMOST NOTHING!! LOL I two stand twist or bantu knot it every now and then but I primarily co-wash Shea Moisture products, use Oil and Hair Milk and let it do as it pleases.

6. Natural hair has come quite a trend and women are being criticized for it. What advice do you have for women who are considering going natural but fear the negative feedback?

The only negative feedback you can encounter for going natural is your own!!! There's absolutely nothing more beautiful than letting your hair grow out in its natural state.

7. The internet is full of natural hair resources. Which sites are your favorite to review?

I'm a huge fan of Afrobella.com and I love all the natural hair tumblr pages!!! They are great for hair inspiration!

Product Review: Kinky-Curly Leave-In

Winter is upon us so it's time to switch out my leave-in conditioner. I wanted something that was a cream-base and offered great moisture with the benefit of added herbs. I found Kinky-Curly Knot Today at Target for $16. The price is more than I care to pay for products but I figured I would give it a try.

How I used it

I cowashed as normal with Shea Moisture conditioner. I applied some Jamaican Black Castor oil to my hairline to prevent thinning. Next, I squeezed about a quarter size amount of the Knot Today into my palm and smoothed it through the section I was going to twist. Once I applied, I detangled my hair and then twisted with a little bit of Shea Moisture Curl Milk.

What I liked

This stuff smells AMAZING!I couldn't stop sniffing it. LOL It's very light and doesn't leave product buildup. I didn't have any issue with it not mixing well with my conditioner or leaving white flakes. It blended into my hair very well and left my twists super shiny and moisturized. Detangling with it was a breeze. I've never had it go so quickly or smoothly. It also give my hair a great soft hold. It felt stiff without being crunchy or too hard.

What I didn't like
I don't particularly care for the consistency. I wanted something creamy and this was more like a gel - a watered down gel. It smooths very easy into your hands though. I also didn't like the price. $16 for this?? I don't like to pay over $10 for products but so far I am liking what I got for my money.

I'm back from Las Vegas and what a trip it was! If you haven't been to Vegas with your girls, make sure you do. We had the best 4 days there celebrating my BFF's birthday. We ate, we danced, we went ziplining (yes ziplining) and visited almost every hotel on the strip. Below are a few pictures from my hair over the 4 days. I was worried about the dry, desert heat but it was actually pretty cold while we were there. I tried to keep my styling simple and low maintenance since sleep was pretty much non-existent. Needless to say, my hair held up well despite the elements and the smoke.

Excuse the silly glasses I tried on. My hair was pulled up into a puff with a few front loose pieces as a bang.

Excuse the sleepy face. We were at the airport. I wore my hair in twists on the plane ride there.

During our day of exploring, I rocked a puff. It went well with taking photos with The Purple One at the wax museum.

Upon arrival in Vegas, I took my twists apart and rocked them loose.

Our first night hitting the town in Vegas, I rocked a side puff to Tao. Amazing club, by the way.

Even Will Smith liked my puff.

Another day of exploring and I rocked a puff with a front bang. It was simply yet stylish.

Vacation Hair

In two short days, I am off to Fabulous Las Vegas to celebrate my best friend's 30th birthday. This is our first girls trip in 3 years and we are going to enjoy every moment of it. I've been contemplating what to do with my hair while on the West Coast and I'm drawing a blank. I've never had to deal with desert heat so who knows how my hair will hold up. I've decided to wash my hair and wear my twists on the plane right out there. My nighttime hair will be my twists taken apart a couple of times for big, fluffy hair. Depending on what time we get in each night (or morning), I hope I remember to at least put on my bonnet to preserve my hair. Nonetheless, Las Vegas, here we come!

Bentonite Clay and Natural Hair

Lately my hair has been in a natural hair slump. Limp, dry and not falling the way I want. That's usually an indication that it's time for a trim and deep cleanse so I picked up a jar of Bentonite clay from my local Whole Foods market and whipped it up for a hair treatment.

If you haven't tried this stuff on your natural hair, you are missing out! Not only does it remove product buildup and give your hair a super good cleaning, it also helps define your curls. I haven't seen a head of natural hair that doesn't look fantastic after doing this treatment. Additionally, Bentonite clay can be used as a face mask as well. Two for one!

For my treatment, I mixed 2 tablespoons of clay, 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and some water. The consistency should be paste like so add more clay or water as needed. If you want to make it a little more hydrating, add a few drops of your favorite oil. DO NOT MIX THIS IN A METAL BOWL. Bentonite clay mixed with vinegar will cause a chemical reaction and will lessen the effectiveness of the mixture. Use a glass bowl and plastic or wood utensils when mixing.

Apply to your face and hair and allow it to sit for 15-30 minutes. You will feel a tugging at your skin if applied to your face. No worries; this is just the clay working it's magic. To remove from your face, use a wet warm washcloth and gently wipe away. To remove from your hair, wash your hair as you normally do. To ensure that I removed all of the product, I apply a little watered down shampoo, scrub and rinse. Make sure you deep condition after this treatment and watch your curls pop and shine.

I love my Twitter followers and today's interview comes from yet another one. Meet, Tazzee, another ATLien who recently big chopped (yay!). Here's her story:

Big chop day. Coil out.

1. Introduce yourself to us (are you: loc'ed, newly natural, natural-n-pressed, etc.)

I'm newly natural. My last relaxer was January 15, 2011 and I big chopped on October 15, 2011.

2. Congratulations on your recent big chop! How do you feel?

I feel great! It wasn't until she started chopping that I realized how much value I placed on my hair. I've had long hair almost all my life, with the exception of when I got it cut for my senior prom. Even then, I wanted the top short and back long, but the stylist told me (after she cut it) that my hair in the back was too damaged so she just cut it all. That was twenty-??? years ago. Getting a major cut was liberating! It was like "Now I'm free!"

3. What prompted you to decide to go natural?

Actually I first thought of going natural back in 2007. Back then I decided to go back to school (in the future) and said I was going to go natural when I started school. Going natural now was by chance. At the beginning of the year I joined a workout group that met on Saturdays. I always have Saturday hair appointments and one day I realized that it had been 9 weeks since my last relaxer so I decided to try this natural thing. Also, I try to workout regularly. My decision to chop was because I was tired of the braids and I knew there wasn't a transitioning style that can withstand immense sweat 5 days a week.

4. Tell us about your transition.

Initially it was fairly easy. I did plenty of braidouts and ponytails. I got tree braids before my vacation at 4 months post relaxer because I didn't want to deal with my hair. I got kind of lazy so I kept them. Labor Day weekend, (almost 8 months post-relaxer) I decided I was going to try doing my hair again. What a mess!!!! My braidout (see below) did NOT work. That Tuesday, I got another set of braids and decided that I was going to chop soon. This was after I initially said I was going to transition for 2 years. I guess I'm not as patient as I thought.

5. What was your transition hair regimen and how does it differ from what you're doing now as a newly natural?

When transitioning, I co-washed at least once a week and shampooed every other week. I would cornrow my hair back (I called it my Cleo - Cleo from Set it Off), let it either air dry or sit under the dryer and then take out the braids. Then I started doing individual braids - I called that my Celie because my hair was plaited like Lil Celie in The Color Purple. I would put a roller on the ends of both types of braids to hold them. I tried twists, but because a lot of my hair was relaxed, the ends wouldn't stay and they would untwist.

As I stated above, 4 months in I started wearing the braids. Now that I've chopped, I've already washed my hair twice since Saturday, trying out new styles. I have found out that my wash-n-go is more of a wash-n-fro. My hair isn't as curly as I thought it would be, LOL. I suspect I will shampoo at least every other week. I will probably co-wash at least twice a week because of all the sweat. I'm still figuring out how I will style it but I foresee plenty of twists in my future. When I was relaxed I was the ponytail queen so I can't wait until I can wear a puff.

6. Fear of being criticized for having natural hair can be paralyzing to those who want to big chop. What advice do you have for women who are considering going natural but fear the negative feedback?

Remember it's your hair. If you are comfortable with it, rest in that. Honestly, I haven't received much negative feedback. Most people have either proclaimed how much they like it or kept silent. Also remember, it will grow. The people that may be negative will be loving your hair when it grows, so the negative comments are only temporary.

7. One of the most frequent statements I hear from newly naturals is "what if my significant other doesn't support me?". Did your significant other support your decision to go natural?

Mastering the wash n ' go

When I was just thinking about it, I mentioned it to my husband. After that he constantly pointed out natural hairstyles - but it wasn't in a negative way. When I started the process he was all-in. Even when I thought I was having a bad hair day, he was very complimentary. When I got the tree braids he said 'it looks just like your hair.' After my Labor Day weekend debacle, I told him I couldn't take it anymore and I was cutting after the next set of braids. He said "OK, but don't complain to me when you don't like your hair." I had just shown him how short I think my hair would be and he thought it would be too short. During my 5 weeks of tree braids, I continued to prep him for my cut. When my stylist finished and my hair was longer than I thought it would be, I was giddy. But when I walked in the house, the look on my husband's face was a letdown. So while he supported my decision, I guess he wasn't ready. I catch him periodically looking at my hair - more than he ever did when it was relaxed. One day I caught him glancing and I actually had him touch it. I'm sure he will get over it and as it grows I'm sure he'll love it. Not once has he said anything negative though.

Your site and Curly Nikki are my favorites. I haven't gotten into much on youtube because the main thing I've read is that everyone's hair is different. Right now I'm just trying to learn what my hair likes.

Weekend Hair

I went to the Jay-Z/Kanye concert Saturday night before my mom's birthday party and wore this cute style. I washed and twisted my hair but didn't like how it looked loose so I pinned it over to the side with a bunch of bobby pins. It was perfect concert hair.

Extracting Aloe Vera Gel

I tackled the chore of extracting my own aloe vera gel from a branch I picked up at the Farmers Market. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be but it was definitely messy.

A plastic spoon, a ziploc bag and a knife. Make sure you have enough space.

Starting at the base of the branch, slice down the middle. The branch I had was huge so I had to cut it in half.

Pull the top layer back to expose the inside of the branch.

Using a spoon, scrap the gel out and it into a plastic bag.

Keep scraping. There will be juice in there so be sure to pour that into the bag as well.

Use your hand and scrap the remaining out.

Store in an air tight bag in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

I've been using the gel to help add moisture to my hair after washing it and using the juice as a hair refresher. Can't say I've noticed much of a difference but since it's only been a week, I'll give it a little longer.

On Thursday, October 20 I had the pleasure of presenting a discussion called "Tips for Transitioners" at the Curls Of The World Store in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Aloe Vera and Natural Hair

Aloe Vera and Natural Hair go hand-in-hand. I paid a visit to the Dekalb Farmers Market the other night and saw these HUGE aloe vera branches. I've read and heard about the benefits of aloe vera and natural hair but have not experienced it for myself.

What better time to try something new with the cold, dry winter months ahead. Aloe vera has long since been considered essential to hair care in general. It is great for moisturizing hair, taingy oily hair, preventing excessive hair loss and soothing he scalp. I'm sure we can all attest to the benefits aloe vera also has when it comes to healing cuts and scars.

Naturals (new and experience) can benefit from pure aloe vera in various ways. Here's how:

Extraction

Using sharp knife, cut the branch open and scrap the gel/juice out. You can store it on a bottle in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks to preserve.

Moisturizer

Mix it with a little bit of your favorite oil and apply directly to your hair. You can also use it as a hair refresher by mixing it with a some water and your favorite oils. Spray onto your hair as a quick pick-me-up.

Conditioner

Instead of your regular conditioner, try mixing 1/4 cup of aloe vera gel with your favorite oils. Apply to hair after shampooing or while cowashing. Leave it in for 5-10 minutes and rinse.

Overnight Treatment

Deep conditioning is extremely important during the winter when the air tends to be drier. For maximum hydration, apply aloe vera gel to her hair overnight as a deep treatment. It can be mixed with your favorite butters, creams and oils and applied to your hair. Rinse it and style as usual the next dry.

Dandruff

If you are a dandruff sufferer like me, aloe vera gel is great natural astringent that can combat this. Apply the gel directly to your scalp and massage in. Leave it in for no longer than 20 minutes and rinse out. Repeat this treatment as often as you need to until the dandruff is gone.

As I mentioned before, aloe vera is a natural astringent so be sure you do not leave it in too long as it can be drying to your hair and scalp. If mixed with oil, it will balance the dryness.

Meet, Ebony, a Georgia natural who is loving herself and her hair...naturally. Here's her story:

1. Introduce yourself to us (are you: loc'ed, newly natural, natural-n-pressed, etc.)
My name is Ebony and I currently live in Norcross, GA. I've been natural going on seven years and this is my second time around.

2. Why did you decide to go natural?
I wanted to be as close to my organic self as possible. It was important that I strip myself of unnecessary and superficial layers during my spiritual transformation...inside and out. So, it was only natural that I let go of the relaxer. (Pun intended) ;-)

3. You've been natural for quite sometime now. Are you still surprised when people stop you on the street to question you about your hair?
At first I was a little surprised because I don't see natural hair the way a lot of people see it. To me it's like being black, short, or tall; it's the way I was born. Over time, I began to realize that it's more than that for some. It can be a very scary change.

4. How did people react to the changes you made to your hair? Were they supportive or against it?
For the most part, a majority have been very supportive...almost intrigued. The first time around (1999) only a couple of people thought I was out of my mind. This time, not many really said much because they knew that I was going to do what I wanted, especially when it meant doing what I thought was best for me. Honestly, the few that did have something to say were older. They grew up in what some people thought was the worst time to be black, and hated almost anything that reminded them of the struggle...including having "nappy" hair.

One of my aunts flat out asked me, "Now why would you wanna go and do something like that after all we've worked for. Baby we don't have to wear our hair like that anymore." My granny was in the "Amen corner". It was as if they thought I was oppressed! I've even had some say, "Well you can do that because your hair ain't really nappy for real!" (REALLY!?!?) The most annoying reactions have been ones of ignorance.

4. What's the one thing you've noticed about yourself since going natural?
I've noticed that a different type of freedom to be myself in totality has been unleashed...right to the core. Also, I'm more confident, humble, and grateful.

5. What's your hair regimen?

There's really no specific regimen that I'm married to. I just make sure my hair is always clean, moisturized, and protected. I shampoo maybe every other week, condition every week (even if it's just a spray on leave-in). I'm more protective of my hair in the winter time though, making sure I pre-poo with coconut oil is a must before shampooing. Also, my hair is protected at least three weeks out of the month. My ends are trimmed about three times a year. I try not to fuss with it too often.

6. Natural hair has come quite a trend and women are being criticized for it. What advice do you have for women who are considering going natural but fear the negative feedback?
I'd ask them to make sure they really want to be natural..If so, why? As with everything, it should be for the right reasons. It's not a trend for everyone, but it's still a huge step no matter what. You have to be secure within yourself and make the right decisions for YOU! Find styles that suit YOU! You'll be much more in love with your hair that way...and it'll give people less to say (if you're worried about that). You're most beautiful when you're completely YOU! As cliche as it is: Do YOU!

7. The internet is full of natural hair resources. Which sites are your favorite to review?
There's lots of great information out there. A couple of sites I love are Naturally Curly, Curly Nikki, and Afrobella.

I have finally reached the point in my natural hair journey where I am ok with the fact that my hair may not be tamed everyday. One of my biggest fears while transitioning was trying to figure out what I would do with my hair on days it didn't want to behave. Some people immediately turn to the creamy crack and throw the towel in, but not me. Instead, I chose to embrace my "untamable mane".

It may be a little unorthodox but I love the days that I can't get one side to hand the way I want, or I can't my twists to be as moisturized as I want. What this signals to me is that I need to change; I need to evolve like my hair. We forget that each of us (including our hair) is so unique that no two days or two moles are alike. That smile you see above is the smile of a woman who has said, "Take me as I am or don't take me at all. Either way, I'm happy with me."

I challenge you to go find that smile in you too and embrace it.

My Hair Regimen

You asked and I answered! I posted this video over on my YouTube channel (go subscribe now!) of my hair regimen. It's pretty simple and takes me about an hour and half to wash, detangle and twist. As I state in the video the only difference with this regimen and what I typically do when I cowash is that I don't prepoo or do a second detangle before twisting.

Testing Out Mini Twists

Semi-mini twists

I have yet to try wearing mini twists for an extended period of time yet (blame it on laziness) but I do want to give them a chance this winter. To prep for the style, I twisted my hair into some semi-mini twists that I wore for about 3 days and then I pulled them apart once. I'm already on day 2 and so far they are holding up well. I mist my hair with a little leave-in conditioner at night and over it with a bonnet. In the morning I spray my hair with water, shake and go. I probably won't apply a moisturizer until day 4 and when I do I will be using flaxseed gel.

This style is holding up really well with the all the rain we are having here in Atlanta. I've come to realize that because I have super thick hair, when I do do my mini twists I will literally have to try and make them as small as possible so that they aren't quite as thick.

Natural Spotlight: 1 Year Later

Today we're catching up with Lisa, a former Natural Spotlight, who is celebrating her one year anniversary. If you recall, I had the pleasure of doing Lisa's big chop for her last year and have watched her hair thrive. Here's her story.

1. It's been a year since your big chop. Wow. How does it feel?

It feels great!! I wish I had done it sooner.

2. Many people are new to your story, tell us why you decided to go natural.

In 2010, one of my good friends ;) decided that she was going natural. I started asking questions about the natural process and hair care advice for my daughter. The more I learned, the more I realized that I could do this. I became very interested and inspired and the rest is history as they say.

3. Usually at the one year mark, you've come to realize some amazing things about your hair and about yourself. What have you learned so far?

I've learned that I can do anything. I had no clue about natural hair and never imagined that I would be natural, but I've taken the time to learn and ask questions. I've learned that what works for someone else's hair may not work for me and that's okay because I'm me!

4. Our hair evolves as we do. What is your current regimen and how has it changed?

I'm so embarrassed to discuss my current regimen; it's practically non-existent. I do, however, try to deep condition once a week. That's probably the only thing I do consistently *hangs head in shame*.

5. What are your favorite products and how do you use them?

Of course, I love the Shea Moisture product line. I use the mist daily, and the shampoo and deep conditioning masque. I also use an olive oil moisturizer that I add a few different oils to. If don't use SM as my shampoo and conditioner I opt for the Giovanni line.

6. You have two natural daughters, how do you care for their hair?

It's alot of work caring for my hair along with my daughters (5 and 13). I pretty much do the same regimen for their hair. I wash it every two weeks, co-wash in between the shampooing, and deep condition.

7. What advice would you give to a transitioner/newly natural?

Research, research, research and don't be afraid to ask questions. Also, be confident in knowing that what may work for everyone else may not work for you and vice versa. Remember that there may be people who do not understand your journey, but that's okay...it's your journey - embrace it and love it.

5 Reasons You’re Not Gaining Length

I recently received a comment that said, ‘I am stuck at 5 inches and I really just want 12 inches of hair, is that too much to ask?’ I smiled because I could relate to that need to achieve a goal hair length except I never put a number to it, I just wanted enough to make a low pony tail. Coincidentally, my hair is also currently 12 inches, so I was sitting here with her goal length and thinking, no it is not too much to ask.

The thing I found in my journey is that the sole factor in getting my hair to move on from a ‘stuck’ position was for me to recognise the things that I was doing that were harming my hair. You are in control of whether that hair stays or moves. Here are 5 reasons why your hair does not gain length

1. You ignore breakage.

This is the top reason and if you read no further, at least read the next two paragraphs. If you have been stuck at a particular length for a long time, the most likely reason is that you have split ends which are breaking off your hair at the same rate as it is growing. The only reasonable thing to do is to trim your hair and by trim I mean cut 2-3 inches off. I could hold your hand and say just look for splits and knots and trim them off but in reality it is very had to do a search and destroy on short hair which you cannot see properly.

The second form of breakage that is largely ignored are those short little quarter inch end segment breaks that happen with very kinky hair. While it is not possible to fully eliminate breakage entirely, it is possible to reduce it to a minimal level by being very gentle, choosing gentle detangling methods and being patient when handling your hair.

2. You are over-manipulating it

I will start with the obvious – puffs and afros are addictive. They are simple and cute but they are styles that for the vast majority can cause hair to tangle, knot and break. The not so obvious is keeping a protective style in for too long. The time and effort required to unravel the strands and remove lint can cause a lot of damage. For those with looser curls, styles like twists which are normally regarded as protective may be terrible for you if they unravel easily and you may be tempted to constantly use a drying gel which does not help your hair.

Your hair will complain bitterly when it is over- manipulated. The top signs are breakage, tangling and knotting. Find a happy medium with your hair.

3. You are still hunting for that magic product

There are no magic products. There are people who have seemingly terrible product choices but great hair and similarly people with great product choices and terrible hair.

The thing to understand about hair length retention is that it is largely mechanical damage that really does you in. Mechanical damage meaning how you physically break your hair. Hair products mainly mask damage, what you can do is prevent damage in the first place. You and your hair handling methods are the most important tools, over and above products.

4. You are following someone else’s regimen

Never ever make the mistake of not listening to your hair. If someone swears by heat training, that does not mean it will for you. If someone swears by coconut oil, that does not mean it will work for you.

There is nothing wrong with experimenting with any method, product or routine. There is something wrong with failing to see that it is not working for your hair. Always pay attention to if your hair breaks or feels less than ideal.

5. You are still using too much heat

As I said previously, length retention has a huge mechanical component to it. Heat ultimately degrades hair. For some people, regular heat use is not a problem as their hair is able to cope with it while for others, even slight heat is an issue.

Learn how your hair behaves. Do not choose style or ease over and above hair health. It may be easier to handle your hair when its curls are not as tight but consider doing a heat free method such as curl formers, braids/twists or banding.

The finer and kinkier your hair, the less likely it is to be able to take a lot of heat.

Something Different

I believe in the 'tried and true' but I also believe that small changes can yield huge results. I decided to try something a little different with my hair today. If you've paid attention to my pictures, you know that I normally wear my hair parted on the side but today, I decided to go for a middle part.

It's not a HUGE change from how I normally wear my hair but this slight adjustment gave me a cute, flirty style that is perfect for work or play. I finger parted my hair to avoid having all those lines in my hair and twisted my wet hair with SM Curl Smoothie. The next morning, I rubbed each twist with some flaxseed gel and then gently pulled them apart. To give my hair some volume, I fluffed my roots with my fingers.

Not bad for a small change, huh?

Tutorial: Up-Do

I love up-dos but wear them sparingly to avoid having an issues with hairline tension. I came across this adorable up-do by MsDanti1 and fell in love with it. I never thought of using perm rods on the ends to add some extra definition to my twists. Let me know if you try this style out and how it worked out for you. Oh, and make sure you subscribe to MsDanti's YouTube channel. She has some awesome makeup and hair tutorials there.

Quick Up-do By Me

Thursday morning I realized that I hadn't washed my hair in almost 3 weeks (eek!). Laziness is something serious! I needed a quick style that I could wear to work until I was able to wash my hair later that evening. I achieved this style by misting my hair with water and using a little flaxseed gel to create two chunky twists on both sides of my head. I didn't use a comb to part since I wanted it slightly messy.

I pinned each twist back with a couple of bobby pins and fluffed the back section out with my hands to add volume. For a bit of pizzazz I pinned a flower in my hair. It only took me 10 minutes to do this style.

Where do you stand with the great heat debate? Are you for it or against?

Personally, I prefer not to use heat of any kind on my hair. I'm not knocking those that do but prior to me straightening my hair last month, the last time I blow dryer touched my strands was about 5 years ago and I haven't look back since. Even as a broke college student, I came to love air drying my hair. I was the queen of wraps and would break out the flat iron the next day to "bump" my ends. Heat is great for deep conditioning and can be used in moderation if you want to quickly dry your hair. The most important thing is to remember is to apply a heat protectant first.

My Beauty Supply Store Experience

There are two things you can guarantee about Atlanta: great southern food and an endless supply of beauty supply stores. Atlanta is considered one of these premier places in the world to get your 'do beat, pressed, curled, crimped and gelled to the side. I took a field trip after dinner with my girlfriends to what might be the biggest beauty supply store in the city. Located at South Dekalb Mall on Candler Road, Super Beauty Supply Store left me speechless.

What an experience! I wish I had recorded a video of the store just to show you how massive it was. Turns out it used to be a JCPenney's so keep that in mind when comparing the scale. Nonetheless, here are pictures from my visit.

Immediately walking through the doors you are greeted by the multiple checkout lanes. Have you ever seen that in a beauty supply store? I haven't!

Aisles upon aisles of...HAIR!! Remy, Indian Remy, Human, Synthetic. You name it, they carry it.

The hair is never ending...and this was just one aisle.

The world's largest supply of children's hair accessories. I have never seen anything like this.

Need perm rods? You can get the off-brand kind for $.99. Tell them Monique sent you. :)

Want to experiment with flexirods? You can find them cheap here and in every size imaginable.

Want a bun but don't have enough hair? They have a "bun area". 0_0

I found it interesting that the natural hair products were kept in glass cases...that expanded a whole aisle!

Of course Miss Jessie's was there.

There was also a new brand called Chocolate? Never heard of them.

The name of this line tickled me "Baby Don't Be Bald". Its a kids line.

Herbal Essence has a line called "Break's Over". It's supposed to be great for damaged hair. I've never heard of them but this store seemed to be the only one to carry it.

Wigs! Wigs!And more wigs! An entire side of the store was dedicated to wigs.

Drawstring ponytails for kids.

The Wall of Buns. No seriously, these are bun styles that someone has done and they display. You can purchase any of the pre-made styles in any color. All you do to attach is pull the string and pin in place.

Glowing Color Consultation

Pi Nappa Kappa is a natural hair "sorority" formed by natural hair authority Leola Anifowoshe just a few weeks ago. The sorority is part of the Natural Healthy Hair Society, which is also run by Anifowoshe. According to its Facebook page, the organization’s mission is “to educate, inspire and uplift natural hair women, men, boys and girls throughout the entire world” and “to make the word 'nappy' into a 'happy' and celebrated term.”

Product Review: Aussie Moist Conditioner

This week's product review is on none other than Aussie Moist Conditioner. I've seen the name around various hair blogs and everyone who has used it has raved about it. I picked up a bottle at Walmart last week to give it a try with my cowash. Whoa Nelly! This stuff is awesome!

I had to test it out twice because the first time I ended up with serious flakes in my hair, which I realized was a result of me not cleansing my hair with shampoo to remove the other products I had applied. The second time was much better and I could tell a difference with moisture.

This is day one of a braid out I did

I shampooed my hair with Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter shampoo, then deep conditioned with the Aussie Moist conditioner mixed with a little olive oil. I also detangled while I deep conditioned. Afterwards, I rinsed it all out with cold water, applied Jamaican Black Castor Oil to my scalp and hairline and then twisted with a little Shea Moisture Curl Milk.

Likes:

Smell - It's not too overpowering and you catch a whiff of it each time your hair moves.
Hydration - this conditioner is super hydrating; right up there with Hello Hydration.
Affordable - I think I paid less than $3 for this bottle but I do think if you like it as much as I do, you should invest in larger bottle.
Slip - This conditioner has great slip. I found it super easy to detangle.

Dislikes:

It does have some -cones in it so you might notice flakes if you don't deep cleanse your hair first.
I have SUPER thick hair and after two uses, I'm almost out! Eeek! Invest in bigger bottle if you like.
It may not mix well with other products. I noticed the flakes after using my Shea Moisture Curl Smoothie but I didn't see any after using the Curl Milk.

I recently cut about an inch and a half off so my hair is collarbone length when stretched
